Historic Change: Celebrating the Life and Legacy Ida B. Wells

The United States Mint and the National Women’s History Museum, in partnership with the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, invite you to join us for a special evening celebrating the life and legacy of Ida B. Wells and the launch of the new quarter in her honor.

This inspiring program will include a brief film screening, performances by students from the Ida B. Wells Preparatory Academy IB World School, and remarks by special guests.

Ida B. Wells was a prolific educator, investigative journalist, suffragist, and civil rights activist. She fought for justice and equality throughout her life and used her powerful voice to expose violence against African Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The United States Mint and the National Women’s History Museum, in partnership with the Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music, Lehman College, Telemundo, and the estate of Celia Cruz, invite you to join us for a special celebration of the incomparable Celia Cruz and the launch of the new quarter in her honor.

This joyous and inspiring program will include remarks by special guests; a conversation about Cruz’s life and legacy; and performances by Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music Music 4-Train vocals and the Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music Big Band.

Known as the “Queen of Salsa,” Celia Cruz was an internationally-acclaimed singer and dynamic stage performer whose long and versatile career broadened the reach of Caribbean and Latin American music, celebrating its African roots.

Join the National Women’s History Museum, the United States Mint, and the Oswego community to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker and commemorate the release of the 2024 Dr. Mary Edwards Walker quarter, the 13th coin to be released in the U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarters™ Program.  This special event will include remarks from distinguished guests, a panel discussion, performances, and a special presentation to the Walker family.

Program Participants:

As a surgeon, women’s rights advocate, abolitionist, and spy, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker became the first female U.S. Army surgeon during the Civil War. She championed women’s suffrage and advocated for “dress reform.” She is also the only woman to have received the Medal of Honor in U.S. History.

Join the National Women’s History Museum, the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum, and the United States Mint to celebrate the life and legacy of the Honorable Patsy Takemoto Mink and commemorate the release of the 2024 Patsy Mink quarter, the twelfth coin to be released in the U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarters™ Program.

Patsy Takemoto Mink was the first woman of color elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and the first Asian American woman to serve in Congress. In addition to writing bills like Title IX, the Early Childhood Education Act, and the Women’s Educational Equity Act, Mink was the first Asian-American to run for U.S. President. Learn more about Mink’s life and legacy during this special celebration, which will include remarks, a panel discussion, and the short film.
